Students must bring wire stands

The registration fee is now $20 per student. A billing will accompany the final selection list along with the appropriate music for each student.

Back by popular demand, Jeff Girard from Midwest Sheet Music will lead our directors band session in a mix of repertoire new and old, as well as be on hand with many resources and pieces for you to peruse. Thrilled to welcome Jeff to campus, we always appreciate his speed in securing music for all our instrumental groups here at MSU.

Retired Instrumental Music Educator at Grassland Middle School in Franklin, Tennessee, Jan Barry Dossey,was the first band director to open the school in 1986.  Ms. Dossey taught sixth through eighth grade band for 33 years.  The Grassland Bands, under her direction, consistently received superior ratings at Concert Performance Assessment and Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment events. She graduated from Samford University with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1986 and got her Master of Arts with a specialty in conducting in 1990 from Middle Tennessee State University. 
Her professional affiliations include Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, Williamson County Band Directors Association and Tennessee Music Education Association.  She was also selected as a Conn-Selmer VIP Educator.
Ms. Dossey is an active mentor and professional development clinician.  Topics for her sessions include “How to Start Beginners Correctly” and “How to Run an Efficient Rehearsal”.  She is also frequently sought after as an adjudicator and guest conductor in the southeast United States.   
 
A native of Nashville, Tennessee Susan Waters is in her 33rdyear of Instrumental Music Education and is currently the Director of Bands at W. H. Oliver Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Western Kentucky University and her professional affiliations include: Tennessee Music Educators Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, American School Band Directors Association, Delta Omicron, NAfME, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association where she currently serves as Executive Secretary. 
 
Mrs. Waters was hired to start the band program at W. H. Oliver Middle School in 2004. The program has grown from a population only 7 band students on opening day in August to its current membership of over 400 students which represent approximately 42% of the overall school population. Mrs. Waters was named the first W. H. Oliver Middle School “Teacher of the Year” and received a $1000 grant to enhance her rapidly growing program. The W. H. Oliver Band Program has received nothing less than superior ratings at every regional, state and national concert festival in which they have performed. They are a 13-time recipient of the Tennessee Bandmasters Association Sweepstakes Award, and has performed twice at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center as part of the CMA All-Stars concert. The W. H. Oliver Band program has been selected to present a concert at the Tennessee Music Education Association Conference three times. In 2010 the band performed at the Tennessee Bandmasters Hall of Fame concert, which was the first time a middle school band was given the honor of performing for that prestigious event. In February of 2012 and 2018 the Wind Ensemble performed for the College Band Directors National Association/National Band Association Conference. The W. H. Oliver Middle School Band has received national recognition hosting several composers and top educators in professional development, clinic and concert settings.  The national publication “School Band and Orchestra”published their 10th Anniversary edition in July 2008 with an article entitled “Making Band the Thing to Do”profiling Mrs. Waters, her successful teaching practices, and the keys to her highly successful W. H. Oliver Band Program.
 
Mrs. Waters presented at the International Mid-West Band and Orchestra Conference in 2010 and 2019. She has also developed professional development clinics on a variety of topics including: Beginning Band recruiting, Making the Transition to High School Band, Concert Etiquette in the Curriculum, Teamingand Positive Rehearsal Environment. Mrs. Waters is frequently sought after as a professional development clinician and guest conductor across the United States and has been awarded the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence three times.  In addition to her responsibilities as Director of Bands at Oliver, she serves as a content lead for the district, coordinates MNPS Middle School Honor Band and Summer Band Camp, and helps mentor young and emerging band directors.  Mrs. Waters has also been awarded the honor of CMA Foundation Teacher of Excellencethree times.  
 
Mrs. Waters is proud to say she is a product of the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System and feels very fortunate to be providing music education to students in her hometown.   
 
 
Carole Smith Groomsis a 36-year music educator, currently teaching 7thand 8thgrade band and string orchestra classes at Freedom Middle School in Franklin, TN. Born and raised in Winchester, TN, she attended Tennessee Technological University, majoring in music with piano emphasis, earning the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. She holds the Master of Arts degree in Music from the University of Hawai’i, Manoa. Prior to employment in the Franklin Special School District, she was band director at Moore County High School, in Lynchburg, TN and music teacher at Harris Middle School, in Shelbyville, TN. In the early 1990’s she was also an assistant director to the Franklin (TN) High School Marching Band. She currently performs as a flutist with the Nashville Wind Ensemble.
 
Ms. Grooms is a past president of the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, a member of Tennessee Music Educators Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, National Association for Music Education, American String Teachers Association and Phi Beta Mu band directors’ fraternity and is currently president-elect of The American School Band Directors Association. She holds the Early Adolescent/Young Adult Instrumental Music certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In 2015, Ms. Grooms was selected as one of “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” by School Band and Orchestra Magazine, and for the 2018-2019 school year was named a Music Teacher of Excellence by the Country Music Association Foundation.
 
Marsha Hartwein is a retired music educator.  She taught instrumental and general music in Kentucky and Tennessee for thirty-five years.   Ms. Hartwein holds a Bachelor and Masters of Music Education from Murray State University.  Her Bands consistently received high ratings in local and national competitions.   She is an active judge and clinician throughout the country including a clinic at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago Illinois.  Ms. Hartwein has been selected numerous times as an Outstanding Music Educator by the Governor’s school for the Arts.  While teaching in Sumner County she was twice selected as Teacher of the Year. The last ten years of her career Ms. Hartwein taught at Martin Luther King Academic Magnet School. Her bands were selected to perform three times for the Tennessee Music Educator’s In-Service Conference.     Ms. Hartwein currently maintains a studio of thirty private clarinet students.  She and her husband David reside in Gallatin, Tennessee.
